If passed, Voula’s Law would require the Ontario government to provide clear direction to operators of retirement home, long-term care facilities and group homes against the use of the Trespass to Property Act to ban family members who speak out about their loved ones’ living conditions.

Backlash – What can happen to relatives who complain about sub-standard care in long-term care institutions and what to do about it

This is a report on what I learned from my experience after filing a complaint about reprisal. I hope this information will help others who may find themselves in similar circumstances.
If the problem could be properly acknowledged by authorities, caregivers who are retaliated against for complaining might stand a better chance at a fair result. And, if more people were able to complain about abuse and neglect in care homes, without fear of reprisal, we might begin to see some meaningful improvements in the level of care provided in these facilities.
