Message to Doug Ford and Justin Trudeau from The Ottawa Citizen Editorial Board

In some areas that demanded swift action during the pandemic, governments, public servants and the private sector turned on a dime to fill essential needs. The long-term care problem, too, can be addressed – in time to save lives. So, to Mr. Ford and Mr. Trudeau: Shut up. Stop finger-pointing. Come together and act.

Backlash – What can happen to relatives who complain about sub-standard care in long-term care institutions and what to do about it

This is a report on what I learned from my experience after filing a complaint about reprisal. I hope this information will help others who may find themselves in similar circumstances.
If the problem could be properly acknowledged by authorities, caregivers who are retaliated against for complaining might stand a better chance at a fair result. And, if more people were able to complain about abuse and neglect in care homes, without fear of reprisal, we might begin to see some meaningful improvements in the level of care provided in these facilities.
